O sistema educativo angolano tem sido, nos últimos anos, objeto de transformações que visam melhorar e garantir o acesso para todos. Este objetivo tem-se concretizado sobretudo no aumento da população estudantil nos diversos ciclos de ensino. No entanto, apesar destes dados serem positivos para o sistema educativo angolano, existe um défice de estudos que abordem a origem social destes públicos estudantis. Por isso, a presente investigação, realizada em duas escolas pré-universitárias da província do Huambo (Angola), teve como objetivo conhecer a origem social e a trajetória escolar dos estudantes e perceber as expetativas que estes jovens/estudantes têm em relação ao seu futuro escolar e profissional. A análise da informação recolhida permitiu identificar que a maior parte dos alunos que frequenta as duas instituições escolares é oriunda de famílias com capital económico elevado, e que o capital cultural é mais elevado entre os alunos da escola católica. O insucesso escolar marca sobretudo a trajetória escolar dos alunos que frequentam a instituição escolar estatal. Apesar de todos os inquiridos terem como objetivo continuar a estudar depois da 12ª classe, os alunos da escola católica ambicionam chegar a níveis escolares mais elevados comparativamente com os alunos da escola estatal. Em relação à futura profissão, os alunos de ambas as instituições escolares esperam vir a desempenhar profissões inseridas nos grupos profissionais considerados mais valorizados socialmente.

The educative system Angolan, in recent years, has been the object of transformation aimed at improving and ensuring access to all. This goal has been achieved especially in increasing student population in the various levels of education. However, despite these data be positive for the Angolan education system, there is deficit in research works on the social backgrounds of the student populace. Therefore, the present research, carried out in two pre-university schools of the province of Huambo (Angola), aimed to know social origin and school life of students and realize the expectations that these young people/students have in relation to future school and professional. The analysis of the information collected has identified that most of the students who attend the two educational institutions are coming from families with high economic capital, and that the cultural capital is higher among student of Catholic school. School failures brand especially the school life of students who attend state school institution. Although all respondents have aimed to continue education after Grade 12, students of Catholic schools aspire to reach higher levels of education compared to the students of the state school. Regarding future profession, students of both educational institutions expect to play professions inserted into the professional groups considered more socially valued.
