This work was born from a dual observation: the problems inherent to work accidents and the
existing theoretical and empirical gap concerning the study of the psychological consequences
of their occurrence.
This project comprises 2 studies, both of which took place within a Portuguese Police
Institution. Study 1, of a qualitative nature, was carried out with the aim of understanding the
types and physical consequences of work accidents that took place at the Institution, serving
as the basis for Study 2. The main objectives of Study 2 were to determine the incidence of
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and co-morbid disorders (depression and anxiety) in
victims and witnesses of work accidents and to analyse the moderating effect of the
communal coping strategies and of the cohesion of the work group in the relationship between
the evaluation that the person makes regarding the degree of trauma associated with the work
accident and the severity of the symptoms of PTSD.
The sample was composed of 717 respondents (of which 80 and 73 have work accident
experience, as victims and witnesses, respectively).
The results suggest that the psychological consequences of work accidents are worthy of
attention, from a research and prevention perspective, since 9% and 20% of the victims and
witnesses, respectively, have a diagnosis consistent with PTSD. Simultaneously, 65% and
50% of individuals with a clinical diagnosis of PTSD also have anxiety and depression
diagnosis symptoms, respectively. The moderation results revealed that the relationship
between the evaluation that person make of a work accident and the severity of the symptoms
is moderated by active-antisocial coping strategies and by work group cohesion.
