O presente trabalho pretende demonstrar o modo como as Marchas Populares de Lisboa se assumem como performances culturais que configuram a identidade dos bairros que representam. Este estudo centra-se em Marvila, uma freguesia periférica que não ocupa um lugar de destaque na hierarquia mítica do imaginário lisboeta (Cordeiro, 1997:21) mas cuja zona histórica corresponde a uma das áreas mais antigas da cidade. Sendo que esta pesquisa se foca na temática da identidade do bairro e no modo como esta é construída através da história do lugar, das redes de sociabilidade que se estabelecem entre a população que nele habita, e das tradições e rituais que se assumem como práticas representativas destas comunidades, esta dissertação começa por abordar o passado histórico do território marvilense, um vale de muitas e aprazíveis hortas que no século XIX foi transformado pela industrialização. Seguidamente, apresenta a Sociedade Musical 3 d'Agosto, a coletividade que organiza a Marcha de Marvila, que dinamiza a vida sociocultural da população do bairro e que se constitui, por isso, como um palco privilegiado de sociabilidades diversas. Por último, esta pesquisa pretende demonstrar como as várias direções desta associação se empenharam em representar na marcha o imaginário da cidade de Lisboa, as tradições de Santo António e, especialmente, a história do bairro e as vivências das comunidades que ao longo dos anos habitaram o território, preservando, deste modo, a memória coletiva dos marvilenses.

This paper aims at demonstrating how the Lisbon Popular Marches are assumed as cultural performances that shape the identity of the neighborhoods they represent. This study focuses on Marvila, a peripheral parish that does not occupy a prominent place in the mythical hierarchy of Lisbon imaginary, (Cordeiro, 1997: 21) but whose historic area corresponds to one of the oldest areas of the city. Being that research focused on neighborhood identity and the way it is set up by the history of the place, the sociability networks that are established between the population living there and the rituals and traditions which are seen as representative practices of these communities, this thesis begins by addressing the historical past of Marvila’s territory, which was a valley of many delightful gardens that was transformed by the industrialization, in the nineteenth century. Then, we will present the Sociedade Musical 3 d'Agosto, the recreational society that organizes Marvila march, that boosts the socio-cultural life of the neighborhood population and that constitutes a privileged stage for the several sociabilities. Finally, we intend to demonstrate how the various directors of the association have engaged in showing in their march the imagination of Lisbon, St. Anthony traditions and especially the history of the neighborhood and the life experiences of the communities who have lived in the territory for years, thus preserving the collective memory of its inhabitants, who are called marvilenses.
