Desde o fim da União Soviética, o Cáucaso tornou-se uma região que atrai diferentes potências e diferentes interesses. Durante décadas sob domínio russo, a região está hoje no centro de complexos conflitos de interesse devido à sua localização estratégica e riqueza energética que fazem emergir novas problemáticas e novos actores como o Azerbaijão. Em especial durante a última década, a corrida pelo controlo do Cáucaso tem-se intensificado o que levou ao desafio da posição hegemónica da Rússia por uma série de outros actores numa região que aquela considera crucial para a integridade das suas fronteiras, a estabilidade do seu regime político e a defesa em geral dos seus interesses nacionais. Esta dissertação tem como objectivo compreender o impacto que as opções políticas do estado azeri no sector energético têm tido na relação com a Rússia, analisando os factores que estruturam a relação entre estes dois estados desde o fim da URSS. Ao estudar as questões energéticas, e as suas implicações securitárias nas relações entre a Rússia e o Azerbaijão, esta dissertação procura também identificar e compreender alguns dos factores que mais impacto têm na estabilidade desta região conturbada.

Since the end of the Soviet Union, the Caucasus has become a region that attracts different powers and different interests. For decades under Russian domination, the region is now in the centre of complex conflicts of interest due to its strategic location and energy wealth to bring out new issues and new actors such as Azerbaijan. Especially during the last decade, the race for control of the Caucasus has intensified which led to challenge the hegemonic position of Russia by a number of other actors in a region that Russia considers crucial to the integrity of its borders, stability of its political regime and the defence of their national interests. This thesis aims to understand the impact that the political choices of the Azerbaijani state in the energy sector have had in the relationship with Russia, analysing the factors that structure the relationship between the two states since the end of the USSR, by studying energy issues, and their security implications in relations between Russia and Azerbaijan. Furthermore this thesis also seeks to identify and understand some of the factors that most impact have on the stability of this troubled region.
