A presente investigação analisa e reflete contextos da prática profissional dos assistentes sociais da Região Autónoma dos Açores no início do século XXI. Para o efeito, comparamos espaços temporais, fazendo a analogia com o termo “sociedade de risco”, utilizado por Ulrick Beck (2001), e com o contexto da prática profissional dos assistentes sociais. Essa prática está relacionada com as caraterísticas geográficas, históricas, sociais e políticas que obrigaram a uma procura de respostas face aos momentos de crise. A metodologia da pesquisa orientou-se pelo método misto, associando as abordagens qualitativa e quantitativa com realce para o método qualitativo e para paradigma interpretativo que possibilita a compreensão do sentido que os assistentes sociais dão à sua prática dando abertura a declarações e proposições coerentemente relacionadas, que orientam o pensamento e a investigação. No contexto do paradigma interpretativo, esta investigação tem por referencial teórico a perspetiva fenomenológica, dado que os assistentes sociais entrevistados participaram de forma ativa nesta investigação com os seus testemunhos. A lógica indutiva conduziu a investigação, a escolha do enquadramento concetual, a análise de conteúdo das entrevistas e procurou refletir o contexto da prática profissional do Serviço Social. Como resultado da investigação identificamos que as caraterísticas peculiares da Região Autónoma dos Açores permitem analisar a prática profissional dos assistentes sociais e políticas sociais em diferentes áreas de intervenção social e diferentes momentos de crise. São preocupações dos assistentes sociais, desta investigação, responder e encontrar soluções inclusivas para os problemas sociais e a necessidade de formação contínua específica na área social.

The present research analyzes and reflects contexts of the professional practice of the social workers of the Autonomous Region of the Azores during the 21st century. To this end, we compare temporal spaces, using the analogy with the term "risk society", used by Ulrick Beck (2001), and with the context of professional practice of social workers. This practice is related to the geographic, historical, social and political characteristics that have forced a search for answers to the moments of crisis. The methodology of the research was guided by the mixed method, associating the qualitative and quantitative approaches with emphasis to the qualitative method and to the interpretative paradigm that makes possible the understanding of the sense that the social workers give to their practice giving open to coherently related statements and propositions, which guide thinking and research. In the context of the interpretative paradigm, this research has as theoretical reference the phenomenological perspective, given that the social workers interviewed participated actively in this investigation with their testimonies. The inductive logic led to the investigation, the choice of the conceptual framework, the content analysis of the interviews and sought to reflect the context of the professional practice of Social Work. As a result of the research we have identified that the peculiar characteristics of the Autonomous Region of the Azores allow analyzing the professional practice of social workers and social policies in different areas of social intervention and different moments of crisis. It is the concerns of social workers in this research to respond and find inclusive solutions to social problems and the need for specific continuous training in the social area.
