O objetivo deste trabalho é obter mais clareza sobre Sebastian Kurz, como é o líder do partido político de direita moderada na Áustria, o ÖVP, mas especificamente sobre o sucesso político dele no contexto da Áustria hoje em dia. O país tem sido um dos poucos países europeus a eleger um partido da extrema direita no parlamento, e os vestígios disso ainda se ressentem hoje. O principal catalisador para isso foi Jörg Haider, que foi um político austríaco extremamente bem-sucedido desde os anos 80 até sua morte em 2008. Este trabalho procura encontrar linhas de comparação entre os dois, que compartilham alguns traços comuns: sucesso em tenra idade, notável pela sua presença pública e pontos de vista sobre questões fundamentais de direita, como a imigração. Finalmente, este trabalho visa colocar Sebastian Kurz no quadro do populismo de direita e ver como suas táticas, discursos e pontos de vista de campanha se aproximam dos de Haider.

The purpose of this work is to provide greater clarity on Sebastian Kurz, as he is the leader of moderate right wing political party in Austria, the ÖVP, but specifically on his political success in the context of modern day Austria. The country has been one of few European countries to elect an extreme right wing into parliament, and the traces of that are still being felt today. The main catalyst for that was Jörg Haider, who was an extremely successful Austrian politician from the 1980s up to his death in 2008. This work as such seeks out to find lines of comparison between the two, who share some common traits: having achieved great success at an early age, notable for their public presence and views on key right wing issues such as immigration. Finally, this work aims to put Sebastian Kurz in the framework of right wing populism and see how close his campaigning tactics, speeches, and viewpoints approach those of Haider’s.
