A investigação acerca do papel das relações significativas nos processos de construção do Self assume particular importância no caso dos jovens em acolhimento residencial. Estando afastados do seu ambiente familiar, estes jovens estão expostos a contextos relacionais e educativos, em que a relação com os educadores poderá ter implicações importantes para o Self. Este estudo visa analisar o papel moderador da perceção dos jovens em acolhimento residencial acerca da sua relação com o educador de referência, em termos de Suporte e de Interações Negativas, na associação entre as representações que o educador tem dos jovens (i.e., hetero-representações) e as perceções dos jovens acerca dessas representações (i.e., meta-representações). Uma amostra de 150 jovens com idade entre os 11 e os 25 anos (M = 15.99, DP = 2.28) preencheu questionários de autorrelato para avaliar as suas meta-representações e perceções da relação com o educador. Os respetivos educadores de referência preencheram um questionário para avaliar as hetero-representações. Os resultados indicaram uma precisão das meta-representações dos jovens apenas nas dimensões que incluem atributos mais observáveis (i.e., Social, Competente e Comportamental). Não se observaram efeitos de moderação das dimensões relacionais nas associações entre as hetero- e as meta-representações. Contudo, a perceção de Suporte estava positivamente associada às dimensões Social, Competente, e Relacional das meta-representações, enquanto a perceção de Interações Negativas estava negativamente associada a essas dimensões, e positivamente associada à dimensão Comportamental das meta-representações. Estes resultados enfatizam a importância da relação jovem-educador para o processo de construção do Self nos jovens em acolhimento residencial.

Research about the role of significant relationships on the processes of construction of the Self is particularly important in the case of youth in residential care. Being apart from their family environment, these youth are exposed to relational and educational contexts, where the relationship with caregivers can have important implications for the Self. This study aims to analyse the moderating role of residential care youth’s perception about their relationship with their reference caregiver, in terms of support and negative interactions, in the association between caregivers’ representations of the youth (i.e., hetero-representations) and youth’s perceptions about those representations (i.e., meta-representations). A sample of 150 youth aged between 11 and 25 years (M = 15.99, SD = 2.28) filled out self-report questionnaires to evaluate their meta-representations and perceptions of their relationship with the caregiver. Youth’s reference caregivers filled out a questionnaire to evaluate hetero-representations. The results indicated a precision in youth’s meta-representations only in dimensions that include more observable attributes (i.e., Social, Competent, and Behavioral). No moderation effects of the relational dimensions in associations between hetero- and meta-representations were found. However, perceived support in the youth-caregiver relationships was positively associated with the Social, Competent, and Relational dimensions of youth’s meta-representations, while the perception of negative interactions was negatively associated with these meta-representation dimensions, and positively associated with the Behavioral dimension of youth’s meta-representations. These results emphasize the importance of the youth-caregiver relationship for the processes of Self construction of youth in residential care.
