Centrada no estudo da revitalização e patrimonialização da Encomendação das Almas (um ritual de culto aos mortos) em três localidade da Beira Baixa, e atendendo a uma lacuna de investigações sobre reconfigurações locais e usos sociais da norma internacional do "património cultural imaterial", esta tese procura compreender: "de que forma a patrimonialização "imaterial" do ritual tem sido usada como uma técnica eficaz de regeneração social de uma realidade em crise?" Tendo por base uma análise sociológica e etnográfica de freguesias caracterizadas pelo despovoamento, abandono das atividades agrícolas e declínio da sua vida social e económica esta tese demonstra a eficácia que o processo de patrimonialização do ritual tem revelado na regeneração das comunidades (trans-locais) aqui estudadas. Nessa nova configuração patrimonial, a Encomendação das Almas tem sido usada como uma tecnologia política de "ritualização do real", por referência aos mecanismos processuais, simbólicos, sensoriais e cognitivos próprios do sistema de ação ritual. Esta tese propõe também uma reflexão aprofundada sobre os processos de transmissão e recriação cultural mediados pelo ritual e pelo património imaterial. A "morte" é aqui analisada como mecanismo estrutural do ritual - entendido enquanto sistema de reagrupamento social transcendental -, simultaneamente, a ritualização da morte implica também um processo sazonal de re-agregação das comunidades dos vivos. Ao contrapormos os valores e mecanismos de ação simbólica e sensorial do ritual ao setor do património cultural, reconsiderou-se este último como um dispositivo de "reagrupamento ontológico" - na medida em que o património comporta também uma interação com o corpo social dos mortos.

Focused on the study of the revitalization and heritage-making of the Commending of the Souls (a ritual form of worshiping the souls of the dead) in three locations in Beira Baixa, Portugal, and addressing a disciplinary gap of research on local reconfigurations and social uses of the international norm of "intangible cultural heritage", this thesis seeks to understand: "how has the "intangible" heritagization of the ritual been used as an effective technique for social regeneration of a reality in crisis?" Based on a sociological and ethnographic analysis of parishes characterized by depopulation, abandonment of agricultural activities and decline in their social and economic life, this thesis demonstrates the effectiveness that the process of heritagization of this ritual has revealed in the regeneration of (trans-local) communities. In this new heritage configuration, the Commending of the Souls has been used as a political "technology of ritualization" of the real, by reference to the processual, symbolic, sensory and cognitive mechanisms inherent to the system of ritual action. This thesis also proposes an in-depth reflection on the processes of cultural recreation mediated by ritual practice and intangible heritage-making. "Death" is here analyzed as a structural component of ritual practices - understood as a system of transcendental social regrouping -, simultaneously, the "ritualization of death" also implies a seasonal re-aggregation of the community of the living. By contrasting the values and mechanisms of symbolic and sensory action of the ritual with those of the cultural heritage, the latter was here reconsidered as a "stage for ontological regroupings" - insofar as the heritage experiences also induces interactions with the social body of the dead.
