Iscte's mission is to promote, stimulate and prepare students to be able to contribute, in a significant and remarkable way, to community life. Currently offering more than 100 training courses in all areas of knowledge, Iscte presents itself as an innovative and reference institution that responds to society's challenges through teaching and research.

Internationalisation

International experience is a key component of students' curriculum. Iscte has an internationalisation strategy that keeps pace with the growing globalisation of education, research and innovation. Iscte has cooperation agreements and protocols with universities around the world, hosts foreign researchers and lecturers, offers dual-degree programmes with some of the most renowned international universities, promotes international experience for its students and welcomes students from over 98 nationalities.

Located in the heart of Lisbon – voted the world’s best tourist destination by numerous international organisations – Iscte brings together different fields of knowledge on its main campus, where it encourages the sharing of space, personal contact, interaction and transdisciplinarity. Students value the transdisciplinary environment they experience at Iscte. Rigour and, at the same time, informality are hallmarks of the relationships between students and lecturers, which translates into a relaxed atmosphere without compromising academic standards. This atmosphere is a hallmark of Iscte, including at its newest campus, which opened in Sintra in 2022.

Sustentability and Soft skills

For Iscte, promoting sustainability in its many dimensions – environmental, social and economic – is part of its responsibility as a higher education institution. Iscte was the first Portuguese university to receive International Environmental Certification, implementing measures across the institution's management practices, teaching, research, and university extension activities, all aimed at ensuring sustainability. All first-cycle study programmes must include modules on cross-cutting skills. Students develop soft skills such as problem-solving, flexibility, a positive attitude, effective communication, teamwork, and other qualities that help them tackle the challenges of the academic environment and the labour market.

Outside the classroom and student support

At Iscte, several groups organise activities that contribute not only to personal and professional development but also to a unique and unforgettable academic experience. With over 16 student societies, an academic music group and a students' union, amongst others, there is no shortage of opportunities to pursue personal projects and extracurricular activities. At the same time, the Social Services are available to the student community to provide, whenever necessary, financial support through social grants, institutional assistance or accommodation.

Employability

With an employability rate of over 96 per cent amongst recent graduates, Iscte promotes access to the labour market through numerous activities organised throughout the year. Various companies and institutions regularly recruit Iscte final-year students, including: Allianz, APAV, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, BANIF, Bayer, BMW, local authorities and other public bodies, Central de Cervejas, CCB, CTT, Danone, Deloitte, EDP, El Corte Inglés, Ernst & Young, Galp Energia, IBM, Jerónimo Martins, KPMG, LNEC, L'Oréal, Nestlé, Novabase, Peugeot, Portugal Telecom, PwC and RTP.

With 100 per cent of its academic staff holding PhDs, the quality and accessibility of its teaching are recognised globally as hallmarks of Iscte.
