The Department of Finance and Accounting, created in 2001, within the Iscte Business School, represents the first case in Portugal of autonomy of these areas at departmental level, thus institutionally consecrating their development at Iscte which, over more than two decades, has been affirmed by the innovation and modernity of the chairs and courses created and by the reputation of its teaching staff.
In the teaching activities of Iscte Business School, the Department offers a vector of specialization in Finance and Accounting that covers all degrees of university education: bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate. This ensures a specialization offer, unique in Portuguese universities, which extends to a wide range of subjects, including mandatory and optional, included in the remaining programs at Iscte Business School.
The Department has 22 teachers, most of whom are full-time. Among the professors with doctorates there is a valuable international component, based on doctorates completed at prestigious American and European universities. There is also a group of guest professors with administration roles in important national companies and institutions and who contribute to greater interaction between teaching activity and business reality. Also noteworthy is the authorship of numerous books, many of which are reference manuals in Portugal, both from a teaching and professional point of view, in their areas of specialty and which well portray the pedagogical quality of the department's teaching staff.
Research plays an important role in the Department's activities. Its faculty has articles published in the best international scientific journals. Seminars for the presentation and discussion of research work are regularly organized, which are usually attended by renowned international academics, as well as the only international scientific conference in the area of Finance that takes place annually in Portugal - the Annual Conference of Iscte Business School in Finance.
