LO1 — Explain the cognitive processes involved in multimedia learning.
LO2 — Analyse multimedia educational resources based on learning theories and principles.
LO3 — Critically evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness of multimedia resources, considering the learning outcomes.
LO4 — Plan adapted digital educational resources.
LO5 — Design and develop multimedia digital educational resources by selecting tools and combining text, images, audio, video and animation in a pedagogically grounded manner.
LO6 — Integrate interactivity, feedback, game-based learning or gamification.
LO7 — Apply principles of inclusion, accessibility, usability and Universal Design for Learning to the design, development and review of digital educational resources.
LO8 — Evaluate the ethical and legal implications of using multimedia resources in education.
P1 — Cognitive foundations: multimedia, learning and instruction; rote and meaningful learning; memory/cognition; dual coding; cognitive load; Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning; verbal and pictorial processing.
P2 — Multimedia design: evidence-based principles; cognitive load management; instructional models; alignment between objectives, content, activities and assessment; pedagogical effectiveness.
P3 — Development of Digital Educational Resources: audience/context; relationship between objectives and resources; combination of text, images, audio, video, animation; planning, prototyping, development, testing and review; digital tools.
P4 — Interactivity and gamification: control, navigation and feedback; games and gamification; elements, mechanics and dynamics; gamified experiences.
P5 — Inclusion, assessment and ethics: usability, accessibility and UDL; adaptation to needs; pedagogical, technical and communication quality assessment; data protection, privacy and copyright.
Assessment in the course unit takes place throughout the semester and includes individual and group components, each accounting for 50% of the final grade. Individual assessment comprises participation in a forum (10%), a knowledge test (10%), a critical analysis of a multimedia educational resource (20%) and an individual reflection on the project developed (10%). Group assessment includes a collaborative design challenge (10%) and the development of a final project (40%).
Together, the different components assess students’ understanding of the foundations of multimedia learning, their ability to critically analyse existing resources, and their application of the principles studied to the design, development and evaluation of multimedia educational solutions. The individual reflection also enables assessment of each student’s contribution, learning, and ability to analyse the group work process.
To pass the course unit, students must obtain a final grade of at least 9.5 on a scale from 0 to 20. A minimum grade of 7.5 is also required in the knowledge test, the individual critical analysis and the final project. All work must comply with the standards of authorship, academic integrity and referencing. No final examination is available for grade improvement.
