O desenvolvimento tecnológico é um desafio na inclusão digital dos seniores e, consequentemente, para a sua inclusão social num Portugal digital. Esta tese aborda a relação dos seniores portugueses com as Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TIC) e as redes sociais online, percecionando a sua relevância e contributo para o capital social. Com as taxas de crescimento do envelhecimento em Portugal e os índices baixos de acesso à internet e às redes sociais online pelos seniores no nosso país (Cardoso et al., 2015), considerámos pertinente compreender, junto dos seniores utilizadores da Internet e das redes sociais "online", qual a realidade atual, entender a importância e como se inserem as redes na sua vida, elencar os meios que utilizam e, perceber quais as funcionalidades e motivações na sua adesão ao mundo "online". Partindo de uma abordagem teórica, de um modelo conceptual e da análise exploratória com dados representativos de dois estudos nacionais (Entidade Reguladora da Comunicação (ERC), 2015; Observatório de Comunicação (OberCom), 2013), orientámos a pesquisa empírica suportada por métodos mistos, com um inquérito por questionário "online" e por entrevistas semiestruturadas, concretizando o objetivo e dando resposta às perguntas de investigação: "As redes sociais online têm um papel ativo no capital social dos seniores?" e "Como contribuem para um envelhecimento ativo dos seniores em Portugal?". Concluiu-se que, atualmente, os seniores são mais tecnológicos e as redes sociais "online" têm um papel ativo no seu capital social contribuindo para a sua inclusão social, para a diminuição da solidão e aumento da autoestima.

Technological development is a challenge for the digital inclusion of seniors and, consequently, for their social inclusion in increasingly digital Portugal. This thesis addresses the relationship of Portuguese seniors with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the Social Networks Sites (SNS), assessing their relevance and contribution to these seniors' social capital. Given the growing rates of ageing in Portugal and the low rates of access to the internet and SNS by this age group in our country (Cardoso et al., 2015), we believe it is relevant to understand the current reality of senior internet and SNS users and assess the importance of networks and how they have become part of their lives, identifying the social media they use most and understanding their purposes and motivations in joining the online world. Starting from a theoretical approach, a conceptual model and an exploratory analysis with representative data from two national studies (Entidade Reguladora da Comunicação (the Portuguese media authority) [ERC], 2015; Observatório de Comunicação (OberCom), 2013), we guided the empirical research supported by mixed methods, including an online survey and semi-structured interviews and managed to achieve our objectives and answer the research questions we had posed: “Do online social networks play an active role in the social capital of seniors?" and "How do they contribute to an active ageing of seniors in Portugal?". We concluded that seniors are currently more technological and SNS play an active role in their social capital, contributing to their social inclusion, reducing loneliness and increasing their self-esteem.
