Este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar a importância do smartphone para um grupo específico de pessoas: imigrantes e refugiados provenientes da Venezuela, em jornada migratória no Brasil. Para compreender a dinâmica e a importância do uso desta mídia digital por este novo fluxo migratório, contamos com a colaboração, por meio de testemunhos, de venezuelanos e venezuelanas recém-chegados, que viviam em Boa Vista, Pacaraima, São Paulo e Brasília. O trabalho de campo foi composto por observações, redação de relatórios, perfis e diários, conversas informais e entrevistas. A Grounded Theory, metodologia qualitativa, cujos resultados emergem dos dados, foi utilizada de forma exploratória nesta tese de doutoramento. Os dados coletados mostraram que o smartphone, ligado à internet, é uma ferramenta que tem potencial para contribuir à superação de vulnerabilidades relacionadas com as trajetórias migratórias. Os mesmos dados mostraram também que é necessário, para isto, ter literacia digital. Chegou-se à conclusão que ao ter literacia e possuir um dispositivo de comunicação como o smartphone há o empoderamento dos usuários, que passam a praticar a comunicação para a transformação social e melhor qualidade de vida. Constatou-se que há uma circularidade no processo de empoderamento por meio dessa mídia, pois o uso do smartphone traz inclusão e mais literacia, enquanto essa, por sua vez, favorece maior eficácia no uso do telefone inteligente para transpor entraves e buscar soluções para as vulnerabilidades encontradas nas trajetórias migratórias. O smartphone utilizado por quem tem literacia digital pode favorecer o exercício da cidadania no país de imigração.

This work investigates the importance of smartphones for immigrants and refugees from Venezuela, on the migratory journey in Brazil. To understand the dynamics and the importance of the usage of this digital media for this new migratory flow, we count on the collaboration, through testimonies, of Venezuelans who had recently arrived, and who lived in Boa Vista, Pacaraima, São Paulo and Brasilia. The field work was composed by observations, writing reports, profiles and diaries, informal conversations and interviews. Grounded Theory, a rigorous qualitative methodology, whose results emerge from the data, was used exploratoryly in this doctoral thesis. The data collected showed that smartphones, connected to the internet, are tools that have the potential to contribute to surpass vulnerabilities related to migratory trajectories. The same data also showed that it is necessary, for this, to have digital literacy. In conclusion, by having literacy and a digital media device like a smartphone, the empowerment of users occurs, using communication for social transformation and better quality of life. It was found that there is a circularity in the empowerment process through this digital media, as the usage of smartphones brings inclusion and more literacy, while this, in turn, favors greater efficiency in the usage of the device to overcome obstacles and seek solutions for the vulnerabilities found in the migratory trajectories. The smartphone used by those with digital literacy can benefit the exercise of citizenship in the country of immigration.
