O sistema nacional de saúde tem enfrentado desafios originados pelo aumento da procura de cuidados de saúde, o qual é motivado, pelo envelhecimento demográfico, entre outros. Também os cidadãos têm demonstrado crescentes expetativas relativamente à forma como estes são prestados. Este aumento foi igualmente sentido nos hospitais privados, tendo-se acentuado a discussão sobre qual deve ser o contributo destes para a sustentabilidade do sistema de saúde e o tipo de relação a estabelecer com o SNS. Neste contexto, este trabalho pretendeu debruçar-se sobre o crescimento da atividade dos hospitais privados nacionais nas últimas décadas, em particular na identificação dos fatores que lhe subjazem, bem como aferir o nível de procura dos principais atos médicos nestes prestadores. Ensaiando-se, finalmente, qual o envolvimento e o papel que este setor deve ter no sistema de saúde. A metodologia de caráter descritivo recorreu a um inquérito por questionário a 240 utentes dos hospitais privados nos últimos 12 meses, bem como a 8 entrevistas a especialistas da área. Os resultados destacaram como principais fatores, o rápido acesso aos cuidados de saúde, seguindo-se o acesso a serviços não prestados pelo SNS, a possibilidade de escolha do profissional, a facilidade de acesso às instalações e o acesso a terapêuticas recentes e inovadoras. Adicionalmente, as consultas de especialidade e os exames (MCDT) foram os atos médicos mais procurados. Uma das conclusões foi a necessidade de uma profícua articulação entre os setores público e privado, baseada numa parceria, aproveitando a capacidade instalada privada em benefício da saúde da população.

The Portuguese National Health System has been facing challenges caused by the growing demand for medical care, which is being driven, among other factors, by demographic ageing. Citizens have also shown increasing expectations regarding the way in which care is provided. This increase was also felt by private hospitals and the discussion on their potential contribution to the health system sustainability and the type of relationship to be established with the National Health Service (SNS) has intensified. In this context, this study aimed to analyse the growing activity of national private hospitals over the past decades, particularly in identifying the underlying factors and assess the level of demand for the main medical services provided by these hospitals. Ultimately, the study reflected on the role and involvement that this sector should have within the health system. The methodology was of a descriptive nature and included the completion of a survey carried out by means of a questionnaire among 240 individuals who had resorted to private hospitals in the last twelve months, as well as eight interviews with specialists in the field. The results highlighted, as main factors, were the quick access to medical care, followed by the access to services not provided by the SNS, the possibility of choosing the doctor, the easy access to the facilities and the access to recent and innovative therapies. Additionally, specialty appointments and diagnostic tests (MCDT) were shown to be the most sought-after medical services. In conclusion, the study highlighted the need for coordination between the public and private sectors, based on a partnership, by making use of the existing private medical capacity for the benefit of the health of the population.
