A explosão no Porto de Beirute a 4 de Agosto de 2020 foi uma tragédia para o Líbano, mas também um pretexto para imaginar o futuro da capital de Beirute e do país que tem sido palco de sucessivas tragédias. Poderá este acidente ser transformado num ponto de viragem para Beirute e para o Líbano? Haverá uma forma de dar ao país e à sua capital uma oportunidade real de realizar todo o potencial aí plantado? Beirute é hoje uma cidade disfuncional, com a sua principal fonte económica, o Porto, arruinada. Este é o ponto de partida do projecto: propor um desenho urbano para a capital, a fim de colmatar uma série de carências à escala da cidade e de recuperar e aumentar o seu potencial. Na (re)concepção das infra-estruturas do Porto de Beirute, foi feita uma tentativa de repensar o limite da linha costeira mediterrânica entre o Porto e a Cidade. Este limite é transformado numa estrutura linear que liga duas alturas com matrizes distintas - do Porto e da Cidade. As barreiras da cidade são transformadas, e uma infra-estrutura fronteiriça torna-se numa infra-estrutura de ligação. No bairro Bourj Hammoud, situado no extremo leste da zona portuária, o seu lado industrial é perceptível. Este projecto individual é apresentado como parte e em ligação com o projecto de grupo maior de redesenhar o Porto de Beirute, e o seu foco principal é a proposta de introdução de uma nova indústria em Bourj Hammoud: a oficina de comboios.

The explosion in the Port of Beirut on 4 August 2020 was a tragedy for Lebanon, but also a pretext to imagine the future of the capital Beirut and the country that has been the scene of successive tragedies. Can this accident be transformed into a turning point for Beirut and Lebanon? Is there a way to give the country and its capital a real chance to realise the full potential planted there? Beirut is today a dysfunctional city, with its main economic source, the Port of Beirut, ruined. This is the starting point of this project: to propose an urban design for the capital in order to address a number of city-wide shortcomings and to recover and increase its potential. In (re)designing the infrastructure of the Port of Beirut, an attempt was made to rethink the boundary of the Mediterranean coastline between the Port and the City. This limit is transformed into a linear structure that connects two heights with different matrices - the Port and the City. The city’s barriers are transformed, and a border infrastructure becomes a connecting infrastructure. In the Bourj Hammoud neighbourhood, situated at the eastern end of the port area, its industrial side is perceptible. This individual project is presented as part of and in connection with the larger group project of redesigning the Port of Beirut, and its main focus is the proposed introduction of a new industry in Bourj Hammoud: the train workshop.
