Com o pretexto de densificar a cidade de Lisboa, é realizado um exercício de reflexão sobre qual deve ser o papel da arquitetura hoje, considerando a cidade que nos é legada, a cidade emergente e a cidade prospetiva. A investigação divide-se em seis jornais, organizados do geral para o particular, estudando, em primeiro lugar, a presença da água na cidade de Lisboa, com incidência nos sistemas de drenagem naturais e artificiais, essenciais para o funcionamento e resiliência da cidade. Em paralelo, são levantadas uma série de questões sobre a disciplina, que dão origem a um manifesto que se materializa num projeto de arquitetura. Pensada a três tempos, a intenção da proposta passa por preservar a memória industrial e recuperar a relação entre o rio e a cidade anterior aos aterros; contribuir para a reorganização dos sistemas hídricos, resolvendo ainda descontinuidades e promovendo habitação; e pela vontade de oferecer espaço público qualificado, enriquecendo aquele que é o habitar comum. A antiga Fábrica de Gás da Matinha, fazendo parte da plataforma industrial oriental, é identificada como objeto de estudo. Cedendo este território à cidade, é desenhado um parque público onde se insere infraestrutura hídrica, composta por uma torre de água e um boqueirão, associados ao sistema de drenagem urbano; e que, simultaneamente, articula as várias cotas e serve de suporte ao programa habitacional. Os gasómetros desativados, enquanto património industrial, são reocupados enquanto espaços recreativos, mantendo a sua estrutura metálica intacta.

Under the pretext of densifying the city of Lisbon, one reflects on the role of architecture in today's world, taking into consideration the city that has been bequeathed to us, the emerging city and the prospective city. The research is divided into six chapters, moving from the general to the particular. Firstly, it examines the presence of water in the city of Lisbon, focusing on natural and artificial drainage systems, which are essential for the functioning and resilience of the city. Concurrently, a set of questions, regarding the discipline, are raised, which give rise to a manifesto that materializes itself into an architecture project. Designed as a threefold project, the aim of the proposal is to preserve the industrial memory and recover the pre-landfill relationship between the river and the city; to contribute to the reorganization of water systems, resolving spatial discontinuities and promoting housing; and to provide high-quality public space, enriching the sense of community. The former Matinha Gas Factory, forming part of Lisbon’s eastern industrial platform, is the object of study. By ceding this territory to the city, a public park was designed, which includes water infrastructure, consisting of a water tower and a tank (boqueirão), associated with the urban drainage system, which simultaneously articulates the various levels and supports the housing programme. The decommissioned gasholders, as industrial heritage, are reoccupied as recreational spaces, keeping their metal structure intact.
