O movimento VIH/Sida, organizações internacionais como a ONUSIDA e os governos da maioria dos países, incluindo Portugal, reconhecem a importância do envolvimento das pessoas que vivem com VIH/Sida (PVVS), nomeadamente na definição, implementação, monitorização e avaliação de políticas de saúde. Com base num modelo teórico psicossocial da participação em movimentos sociais, operacionalizou-se o envolvimento das PVVS como participação numa forma específica de acção colectiva, com o objectivo colectivo de melhorar os resultados das políticas de saúde. Foram inquiridas, através de questionário, sessenta e seis PVVS, para avaliar a dinâmica do envolvimento das PVVS nas políticas de saúde em Portugal e identificar os factores promotores e/ou limitativos. Foram também entrevistados cinco informantes-chave, para caracterizar o contexto do envolvimento das PVVS, em particular a estrutura de oportunidades políticas. O modelo teórico utilizado explicou bem o envolvimento das PVVS nas políticas de saúde. No entanto, algumas variáveis contextuais e individuais não contempladas pelo modelo parecem também influenciar os mecanismos psicossociais presentes. São discutidas as implicações dos resultados encontrados para o maior envolvimento das PVVS, em particular o papel dos decisores políticos e das organizações do movimento VIH/Sida.

The HIV/AIDS movement, international organisations such as UNAIDS and the governments of the majority of countries, Portugal included, recognise the importance of involving people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA), namely in the definition, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health policies. Based on a psychosocial theoretical model of participation on social movements, the involvement of PLHA was operationalised as participation in a specific form of collective action, with the collective goal of improving the results of health policies. Sixty-six PLHA were inquired through a questionnaire, to evaluate the dynamic of PLHA involvement in health policies in Portugal and to identify promoting and limiting factors. Five key-informants were also interviewed to characterise the context of O envolvimento das pessoas que vivem com VIH/Sida nas políticas públicas de saúde ii PLHA involvement, in particular the structure of political opportunities. The theoretical model used was satisfactory for explaining the PHLA involvement in health policies. Nevertheless, some context-associated and individual variables not included in the model also seem to influence the psychosocial mechanisms considered. The implications of the results found for the greater involvement of PLHA are discussed, in particular the role of political decision-makers and of organisations of the HIV/AIDS movement.
