Durante a última década, os campos de gestão transcultural e diferenças culturais têm sido mundialmente discutidos devido à globalização que se tem vindo a sentir. A globalização influencia vários aspectos da sociedade, incluindo a gestão empresarial. Apesar de uma crescente internacionalização, ainda existem muitas e amplas diferenças culturais que necessitam de ser tomadas em consideração quando se trabalha num ambiente transcultural. Para se obter sucesso em negociações empresariais no estrangeiro é necessário estar atento a possíveis diferenças culturais que possam surgir. Em algumas situações, as pessoas não têm uma percepção das divergências culturais até interagirem com uma cultura diferente. O objectivo desta tese consiste no estudo das diferenças culturais entre as culturas portuguesa e norueguesa, de modo a identificar os padrões culturais portugueses de uma perspectiva norueguesa. Os padrões culturais portugueses são identificados após a realização e a análise de entrevistas com noruegueses que trabalharam em Portugal. Para a realização deste trabalho foi aplicada uma técnica inovadora de investigação em diferenças culturais denominada como, The Cultural Standards Method.

The topics of cross cultural management and cultural differences have been widely discussed during the last decade as a result of the world’s globalisation. The globalisation touches most parts of a society, as well as managerial aspects. Despite an increased internationalisation there are still many, and wide cultural differences to consider when operating in a cross cultural environment. To be successful when dealing with business relations outside of one’s own national culture, it is important to prepare for and be aware of possible cultural differences that may appear. In some situations people are not even aware of their cultural dissimilarities before they encounter a different culture. The purpose of this dissertation is to study the differences between the Portuguese and Norwegian cultures in order to identify Portuguese cultural standards from a Norwegian perspective. The cultural standards are identified after conducting and analysing narrative interviews with Norwegians who have worked in Portugal. This is done by applying an innovative way of researching cultural differences, The Cultural Standards Method.
