As populações das zonas rurais da Guiné-Bissau participam no desenvolvimento da educação, através das Escolas Comunitárias que são construídas, mantidas, conservadas pelas próprias populações e que pagam os salários dos professores que ali lecionam. O presente trabalho tem como objectivo principal compreender os sentidos dados pelas famílias das comunidades à escolarização dos filhos, conhecer a relação que mantém com a escola e, ainda as alterações que esta introduziu no quotidiano das comunidades. O trabalho foi desenvolvido através de metodologia qualitativa, com a finalidade de captar os dados da interação da comunidade com a escola. Foram entrevistados 12 pessoas entre pais responsáveis da escola e ex-alunos da escola da comunidade. Como conclusão, verificou-se que as famílias mandam os filhos para escola para aprender a ler e escrever para mudança de vida sobretudo para um futuro melhor que dos pais e que a maior barreira da escolarização é a fraca situação económica das famílias.

Populations of rural areas of Guinea-Bissau participate in the development of education through Community Schools that are constructed, maintained, and preserved by the populations themselves who pay the salaries of teachers who teach there. This study aims to understand the main meanings attributed by the families of the communities to the education of children, to know the relationship they have with the school and also the changes that it introduced in the daily life of the communities. The study was conducted using qualitative methodology in order to capture the data regarding the interaction of the community with the school. Interviews were conducted with 12 parents and former students of the school community. As a conclusion, it was confirmed that families send their children to school to learn to read and write in order to secure a better future and that the major barrier of schooling is the weak economic position of families.
