As exigências do mundo contemporâneo impõem nos jovens, cada vez mais a necessidade de elevação do nível académico por forma a estar a altura dos desafios actuais. Os estudantes guineenses procuram formação superior um pouco, por toda parte do mundo, sendo Portugal um dos principais destinos. Isto porque a ligação histórica favoreceu essa escolha do país do continente europeu. O presente trabalho procura perceber a experiencia de integração escolar dos estudantes guineenses em Portugal, o caso de uma instituição do ensino superior do país, o ISCTE-IUL. Foram entrevistados 15 estudantes guineenses dos diferentes cursos e anos curriculares a nível de licenciatura. Verificou-se que a experiencia de frequentar o ensino superior num país estrangeiro sempre constitui um desafio e é desafiante ainda neste momento particular da crise económica global que o mundo vive. Apesar das dificuldades de várias ordens, nomeadamente, as financeiras que em parte foram minimizadas pela existência de familiares que apoiaram os estudantes em causa, não deixaram de lutar para superar esses desafios que entretanto, foram mais difíceis no primeiro ano da entrada no curso acabando por repercutir nos resultados escolares. Contudo, o processo de integração, apesar de ser difícil, os estudantes empenhar na melhoria dos resultados escolares por forma a ter melhor desempenho escolar possível.

The demands of the modern world impose on young people, more and more the need for raising the academic level in order to be able to face the current challenges. Guinean students seek the higher education almost all over the world, where Portugal is one of the main destinations. This is because of the historical ties that enable the choice of the old continent’s country. This paper aims to understand the experience of the school integration of Guinean students in Portugal, focusing in a higher education institution of the country, ISCTE-IUL. 15 undergraduate Guinean students have been interviewed from different courses and academic years. The findings have shown that the experience of attending higher education in a foreign country is always a challenge and still is more challenging particularly at the global economic crisis that the world is facing. Despite of many difficulties, mainly the financial ones, that has been minimized by the existence of the students’ relatives who supported the students, they did not stop struggling to overcome these challenges however, they were more difficult in the first school year, that eventually affected the school results. However, nevertheless the difficulty of the integration process, students engaged in improving their educational outcomes in order to have as much as possible the best school performance.
