justification for an exhibition”, focuses on the piece of furniture “the indo-portuguese
cabinet.” The universe of the cabinet will be approached taking in consideration its multiple
definitions, its origin and the historical and typological evolution of this piece.
We will reflect on the various definitions and interpretations regarding the
indo-portuguese art and reflect on the reasons that led to the creation of the Museu do
Indo-Português, in Kochi, India and the Museu Palácio de São Paulo, in the Island of
Mozambique, in Mozambique.
We will analyze the universe of the indo-portuguese furniture, with special emphasis
on the characteristics of the cabinet. We present a list of private and public museums, both
national and international, where indo-portuguese cabinets can be found, and we will present
the Facebook page called contador indo-português/indo-portuguese cabinet.
The last part of the dissertation focuses on the analysis of five interviews, namely to a
master cabinet maker, to an auctioneer, to a conservation and restoration technician, to a
collector and to an antiquarian to establish, in their respective areas of activity, the importance
of this piece of furniture. Most of all, we will give an insight into their visions about the indoportuguese
art and cabinet, as well as about the relevance and justification for an exhibition.
The purpose of this work is to give prominence and visibility to the indo-portuguese
cabinet, simultaneously as a piece of furniture, a piece of art, a collectors and elite piece, and
as a contribution for the spread of knowledge about this piece.
