Este trabalho investigou a perceção de indispensabilidade na geração baby boomer. Especificamente, investigou os fatores envolvidos na indispensabilidade percebida (como fator psicossocial) e no bem-estar subjetivo nas pessoas idosas. Um segundo objetivo foi o de testar mediadores que podem explicar esta relação, como a perceção de discriminação, a autoestima e a necessidade de pertença. Colaboram com este estudo 105 participantes da geração baby boomer, que preencheram um questionário com escalas adequadas ao objetivo. Os resultados não revelaram correlações significativas com a indispensabilidade identitária, mas revelaram que, tal como esperado, a perceção de indispensabilidade funcional (económica) esteve associada ao bem-estar subjetivo nas pessoas da geração baby boomer e esta associação foi mediada pela auto-estima dos idosos. No entanto, contrariamente ao esperado a perceção de indispensabilidade funcional não esteve associada com a perceção de discriminação e com a necessidade de pertença. Este trabalho mostrou, pela primeira vez, a importância da perceção de indispensabilidade funcional para o bem-estar dos idosos e tem implicações importantes para a política de reforma.

This work investigated the perception of indispensability in the baby boomer generation. Specifically, we investigated the factors involved perceived indispensability (as a psychosocial factor) and subjective well-being in the elderly. A second objective was to test mediators that can explain this relationship, such as the perception of discrimination, selfesteem and need to belong. 105 participants from the baby boomer generation collaborated in this study, filling out a questionnaire. The results did not reveal significant correlations with identity indispensability, but revealed that, as expected, that the perception of functional (economic) indispensability was associated with subjective well-being in the people of the baby boomer generation, and this association was mediated by the self-esteem of the elderly. However, contrary to what was expected the perception of functional indispensability was not related to the perception of discrimination and the need to belong. This paper showed for the first time the importance of the perception of functional indispensability for the well-being of the elderly and has important implications for the retirement policy.
