A presente tese pretende compreender a dominação racial e de género utilizando uma perspetiva interseccional e analisando a relação das mulheres negras com o padrão de beleza dominante, tendo como centro a estética do cabelo. A feminilidade está ligada socialmente a esta parte do corpo, mas para a mulher negra o cabelo tem um peso maior, pois além da questão da feminilidade, há a racial e muitas vezes elas são conflituais. Os estudos de raça e género demonstram que o ideal feminino exclui a mulher negra. Para compreender como o padrão estético dominante se reflete no quotidiano das mulheres negras, foram feitos inquéritos on line com 222 mulheres negras da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (AML) sobre as suas práticas, experiências e percepções em torno do cabelo. Pretende-se compreender, não apenas como o racismo e o sexismo se interseccionam na reprodução dos padrões dominantes de beleza, mas também como através da estética dos cabelos as mulheres negras resistem a esses processos de dominação.

This thesis aims to understand racial and gender domination using an intersectional perspective, analysing how black women relate with the dominant beauty pattern, with hair aesthetics as the centre. Femininity is socially linked to this part of the body, but for black women hair has a greater weight, because in addition to the issue of femininity there is the racial one and they are often conflictive. Race and gender studies show that the female ideal excludes black women. To understand how the dominant aesthetic pattern is reflected in the daily lives of black women, an online survey was conducted to understand the experiences, practices and perceptions of 222 black women from the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML). We intend to understand not only how racism and sexim intersect in the reproduction of dominant standards of beauty, but also to how, through the aesthetics of hair, black women resist these processes of domination.
