Centrada na trajetória individual da carreira de um artista, esta dissertação explora a vida, obra e métodos de trabalho do coreógrafo Vasco Wellenkamp. Pretendo analisar uma narrativa de vida, utilizando não só as palavras do artista enquanto fonte de conhecimento, mas também as palavras de atores-chave da dança que descrevem o seu percurso e como este impactou, coabitou e permite repensar os modelos de abordagem à dança, em Portugal. De uma dimensão individual parte-se para a análise do impacto coletivo da obra do artista para a história da dança, no país, como um passo para a sua compreensão crítica. Através da análise de uma narrativa de vida, esta tese dá voz a Wellenkamp à luz da história da dança, oferecendo uma outra visão – de dentro - de um dos mais importantes coreógrafos do século XX e XXI em Portugal. Conclui-se que a sua carreira foi - e é – uma referência no panorama da dança em Portugal, pela influência que Wellenkamp teve em gerações de artistas, quer através da sua obra coreográfica, quer pelo seu papel pedagógico nos estudos artísticos em dança.

Focused on the individual trajectory of an artist's career, this dissertation explores the life, work and working methods of the choreographer Vasco Wellenkamp. I intend to analyze a life narrative, using not only the artist's words as a source of knowledge, but also the words of key actors in dance who describe their path and how it impacted, cohabited, and allows rethinking of the models of approach to dance in Portugal. From an individual dimension, I move on to an analysis of the collective impact of the artist's work on the history of dance in the country, as a step towards critical understanding. Through the analysis of a life narrative, this thesis gives voice to Wellenkamp in the light of dance history, offering another vision — from the inside — of one of the most significant choreographers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Portugal. It is concluded that his career was — and is — a reference in the dance panorama in Portugal, due to the influence that Wellenkamp had on generations of artists, both through his choreographic work and his pedagogical role in artistic studies in dance.
