O capital social é um recurso social individual, grupal e comunitário que influencia o desenvolvimento integrado dos territórios. No mesmo espaço coexistem multiterritórios produtores de capital social relacional, cognitivo e estrutural. O capital social é produzido pela ação social territorializada, onde opera o Serviço Social. Contudo, o capital social não tem assumido protagonismo científico-profissional no âmbito do Serviço Social, nem tem sido analisado nas suas múltiplas dimensões. Neste estudo pretendeu-se investigar como se produz o capital social em Marvila e se os profissionais da ação social territorializada se reconhecem como agentes de produção de capital social. Para o efeito usaram-se métodos de investigação mistos, tendo sido aplicado um questionário aos moradores e uma entrevista semiestruturada aos profissionais. Responderam ao questionário 234 moradores de Marvila e foram entrevistados 30 profissionais da ação social territorializada. Os resultados revelaram que a idade, o estatuto socioeconómico e o tempo de permanência no bairro se associaram significativamente ao capital social cognitivo, relacional e estrutural de Marvila, ainda que com configurações distintas. Verificou-se ainda que os profissionais defendem que é por via do desenvolvimento comunitário que se produz capital social estrutural reconhecendo-se como agentes ativos de produção do capital social dos sujeitos da sua intervenção. Esta tese alega que o assistente social, enquanto interventor e investigador, deveria estabelecer uma parceria formal e ativa na construção de indicadores de capital social nos programas de desenvolvimento económico, assumindo-se em defesa da humanização do capitalismo.

Social capital is an individual, group and community social resource that influences the integrated development of territories. Multi-territories that produce relational, cognitive and structural social capital coexist in the same space. Social capital is produced by territorialised social action, where Social Work operates. However, social capital has not taken centre stage in the scientific-professional field of Social Work, nor has its multiple dimensions been analysed. The aim of this study was to investigate how social capital is produced in Marvila and whether territorialised social action professionals recognise themselves as agents of social capital production. To this end, mixed research methods were used, with a questionnaire being administered to residents and a semi-structured interview to professionals. 234 Marvila residents answered the questionnaire and 30 territorialised social action professionals were interviewed. The results revealed that age, socio-economic status and length of time living in the neighbourhood were significantly associated with Marvila's cognitive, relational and structural social capital, albeit in different configurations. It was also found that the professionals argue that it is through community development that structural social capital is produced, recognising themselves as active agents in producing the social capital of the subjects of their intervention. This thesis argues that the social worker, as an intervener and researcher, should establish a formal and active partnership in the construction of social capital indicators in economic development programmes, defending the humanisation of capitalism.
