Lisboa surpreende pela quantidade de vazios urbanos 4 edifícios abandonados, lotes vagos e estruturas não utilizadas. Nestes espaços já são observadas algumas dinâmicas, como por exemplo, hortas urbanas, ações socioculturais e atividades criativas, que podem ser identificadas como entre-usos. Entre-usos, a tradução do termo alemão "Zwischennutzung", são os usos de caráter temporário atribuídos a vazios urbanos como intermediários entre uma situação de falta de uso e a implementação de um uso futuro. Os entre-usos já estão institucionalizados no planejamento urbano de Berlim, onde também são amplamente encontrados, tornando esta cidade uma boa referência para entender suas características e potencialidades relevantes para o urbanismo. Em uma perspectiva complementar, observa-se que, perante as atuais particularidades da sociedade, no âmbito dos estudos urbanos, discursos defendem um urbanismo com novas características. Um novo urbanismo que seja reflexivo e mediador que promova a transformação urbana e a diversidade, onde o Estado tenha um papel regulador. Neste sentido, admitindo como hipótese de partida que os entre-usos têm potencial para se tornarem numa nova ferramenta, que responda às questões do novo urbanismo e motive o desenvolvimento urbano, pretende-se com este trabalho contribuir para o debate sobre os entre-usos através do estudo de duas realidades. A partir da exposição da evolução dos entre-usos em Berlim e dos casos bem documentados nesta cidade, possibilita-se a compreensão da sua institucionalização como parte do planejamento urbano. Com base em alguns exemplos de entre-usos existentes em Lisboa já inseridos em iniciativas governamentais e da investigação de dois estudos de caso nesta cidade, oferece-se a possibilidade de observar as dinâmicas dos entre-usos em Lisboa, suas causas e consequências. Os dois estudos de caso em Lisboa são: a Horta do Monte, uma horta urbana em um lote vago do centro histórico, e a LX Factory, um cluster criativo em uma antiga fábrica.

Lisbon surprises by the amount of urban voids - abandoned buildings, vacant lots and unused structures. In these spaces some particular dynamics can be already observed, such as urban gardens, sociocultural actions and creative activities, which can be identified as in-between uses. In-between-uses, the translation of the German term "Zwischennutzung", are the temporary uses attributed to urban voids as intermediaries between a situation of non-use and the implementation of a future use. The in- between uses are already institutionalized in Berlin´s urban planning, where they are also widely found, making this city a good reference to understand its characteristics and potentialities relevant to urbanism. In a complementary perspective, it is observed that, faced with the current particularities of society, new discourses arise in the area of urban studies that defend an urbanism with new characteristics. A new urbanism that is reflective and mediating, promotes urban transformation and diversity and where the state has a regulatory role. In this sense, assuming as a starting hypothesis that the in-between uses have the potential to become a new tool that answers the questions of the new urbanism and motivates the urban development, this work intends to contribute to the debate about the in-between uses through the study of two realities. From the exposition of the evolution of in-between uses in Berlin and the well-documented cases in this city, it is possible to understand its institutionalization as part of the urban planning. Based on some examples of existing in-between uses in Lisbon, already inserted in government initiatives, and the investigation of two case studies, it is possible to observe the dynamics of in-between uses in Lisbon, their causes and consequences. The two case studies in Lisbon are: Horta do Monte, an urban garden in a vacant lot in the historic centre, and LX Factory, a creative cluster in a former factory.
