A presente dissertação, no âmbito do Curso de Mestrado em Educação e Sociedade, tem como ponto de partida a seguinte questão: “Qual a relação das famílias da comunidade cigana com a escolaridade?”. Na perspetiva sociológica a relação escola-família é pautada por condicionantes ambientais e culturais que são reguladoras de todo o percurso escolar de cada individuo. Tendo as comunidades ciganas caraterísticas étnicas e culturais muito próprias e um historial de afastamento da escola muito enraizado, foi escolhida uma escola do 1ºciclo do ensino básico com um elevado número de alunos de etnia cigana. Quisemos com este trabalho analisar os fatores preponderantes na relação das famílias de uma comunidade cigana e a escolaridade, para tal achou-se pertinente compreender a diversidade sociocultural na escola para posteriormente focarmos a investigação nestas comunidades. Entrevistámos 10 alunos e 5 pais, tendo-se recolhido informação pertinente relativamente ao percurso escolar dos mesmos, às suas expectativas em relação ao futuro, ao papel que a escola desempenha nas suas vidas, bem como às representações que todos têm da mesma. Concluímos que esta escola e esta comunidade conseguiram estabelecer uma relação de proximidade e confiança, devido ao esforço de vários docentes que para tal, implementaram projetos de combate ao abandono e insucesso escolar, bem como de divulgação e valorização da cultura cigana, realizando várias parcerias e alargando o trabalho colaborativo a toda a comunidade.

Within the scope of the Master's Course in Education and Society, the present dissertation will describe and analyse the relationship of Gypsy families with education. From a sociological perspective, the relation between school and family is conditioned by several environmental and cultural conditions that will influence the school path of each individual Because of the ethnic and cultural characteristics of the Gypsy community and the historical heritage of being away from school, a primary school with a high number of students from the Gypsy community was chosen A primary school with a high number of students from the Gypsy community was chosen, because of their ethnic and cultural characteristics and historical heritage of being away from school. To study the main factors of the relation of the Gypsy community and education, firstly it was pertinent to understand the socio-cultural diversity in the school to afterward focus the research in this community. So, we interviewed 10 students and 5 parents, to collect relevant information regarding their school career, their expectations for the future, the role that the school plays in their lives, as well as the representations that everyone has about it. We concluded that this school and this community were able to establish a relationship of proximity and trust, due to the efforts of several teachers who, for this purpose, implemented projects to combat school abandonment and failure, as well as the dissemination and appreciation of Gypsy community culture, establishing partnerships and extending collaborative work to the whole community.
